Sorry for the delay in updating the blog. I had to go out of town last weekend, and my update just didn't happen. We've certainly had a busy week behind us. Truly, they are all busy!
Last week we participated in the Dog Dash. This is our main fundraiser for our PSG. The kids had so much fun running, jogging, and walking for 30 minutes last Friday. Thanks to everyone who particpated.
On Tuesday, the Kids From the Block puppet show came to visit. They presented two shows about bullying, and then the children participated in a discussion about what to do about bullies.
On Thursday, Brownsburg's very own Poet Lauret came to speak to all of the third graders about Brownsburg's history. Her presentation was very interesting and the children enjoyed her visit.
We've been focusing on rounding numbers in math this week. We have reviewed rounding numbers to the nearest 10's and 100's and learned how to round numbers to the nearest 1000's place. On Monday, we will have a review over chapter 3, followed by a test on Tuesday.
In science our focus has been on the sun, moon, and stars. We are learning that the moon goes through several phases each month, and what the names of the phases are. We have learned that the earth's rotation and revolution is the reason behind day and night, and the seasons. We will continue to learn more about the sun, moon, and stars next week through learning centers. We will also incorporate our knowledge of the sun, moon, and stars in our writing next week.
Next Friday, the packets for the Yankee Candle Sales will go home. This is a major fundraiser for the Brownsburg Education Foundation. This wonderful foundation provides scholarships every year to graduating seniors and thousands of dollars in grants to teachers each year. I have been very fortunate to receive grant money for the past few years that I have been able to use in our classroom. Please help us support the BEF.

Who's Ready for a Long Weekend?
We are!!!
It's been another busy week in Room 202. We learned about the 7 continents and 4 oceans, and the children drew and labeled some amazing maps of the world! They are on display in our hallway, so if you are in the building, be sure to check them out. Next week we will continue with our geography lessons, learning about cardinal directions and doing some geography centers.
Next week will also be an exciting week in reading. We will begin guided reading groups next week, as well as begin using Reader's Theater as a way of improving fluency and comprehension.
Technology has certainly not been kind to us this week. We were scheduled for NWEA testing on Wednesday and Friday this week, but due to some server issues, we are scheduled for testing on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday next week. The children have done a fantastic job showing flexibility.
Today in the student's Friday Folders, I sent home information about the Dog Dash that will be held on Friday, Sept. 11. This is a major fundraiser for our school's PSG. The money raised will go to pay for field trips, as well as other wonderful opportunities for our students. Our goal is to raise $15,000. While this number seems high, it is definitely attainable! If each student raises $25.oo, we can reach our goal. There is much more information in the envelope I sent home today. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask me or any member of the PSG. I am hoping that each student in my class can help contribute.
I hope everyone enjoys this Labor Day weekend. I am looking forward to relaxing with my family, and recharging my batteries!

We have made it through another busy week. Each week, I will try to update you on the week that was, as well as events that are up and coming in the week ahead.
This week we have been working a lot on place value in math. We have been working with numbers up to one million - finding the value of digits whether in the ones, tens, hundreds, and so forth. The children have done a fabulous job of learning this skill. We also worked on number patterns. Next week, we will continue with chapter 2 in math and end the week with a quiz over place value and number patterns. Look for more information in the assignment notebook next week.
This week in Language Arts we have learned about interrogative and declarative sentences. We learned how we can identify these types of sentences and how to properly punctuate these types of sentences. Next week we will continue learning imperative and exclamatory sentences. We will read the story Nate the Great in our reading books, and continue to make text-to-self connections and text-to-text connections in Reading Workshop. There seems to be some confusion about the reading logs. Each night, the children are expected to read a minimum of 15 minutes at least 5 nights per week. The children are welcome to read anything they choose. Every night they need to record the title of the book, and then 1 fact from the story they read, and 1 thing they wonder about (think of a question about their reading). At the end of the week, the bottom of the reading log needs to be signed and returned to school each Monday.
In Writers' Workshop, we have been working from the book called The Simple Six. I am using this book as a tool to help the children to become better writers and how to be successful on the ISTEP this spring. So far we have learned how good writers stick to a topic and use logical order when writing. Next week we will learn how interesting words make our writing better.
Spelling has been going great. Remember, the pre-test is on Monday. Spelling homework also goes home on Monday nights and is due on Wednesday. Final test is on Thursday.
Next week we will take the Reading NWEA on Wednesday and the Math NWEA on Friday. I will be able to use these scores to determine differentiation strategies for the children as well as start setting goals for the children for spring testing.
We have been working very hard at establishing routines this week. Last week was all about learning and practicing new routines, this week was all about reinforcing them. The children are
taking a lot in, but they are doing a fantastic job.
Finally, on Thursday, I sent home a yellow information paper. Please review this paper, make any necessary changes, and return this to school with you child on Monday. It is important to get this information back because we use this information in the event of an emergency.

We Survived the First Week!
Whew! We made it! It was a long week, and I am sure that the children are as tired as I am, but I feel like we had a productive week.
We spent the majority of the week establishing routines, routines, routines! When we weren't working on routines, we were learning procedures, procedures, procedures! Seriously, we spent a lot of time learning how our classroom clicks. The children also took beginning of the year assessments in reading and math.
Next week will prove to be another busy week. On Monday, we will have our DIBELS reading assessment. School pictures will be on Wednesday. The following week will be NWEA testing. Once I know the actual days and times, I will be sure to pass along that information.
We will also start a "regular" week. Monday will be the spelling pre-test, and the spelling packet will go home for homework, due on Wednesday. Tuesday the reading book will go home with a bookmark to sign for Wednesday. Thursday will be the final spelling test. We will also be working on place value and other number sense standards this week. It will definitely be a busy week, but I am excited to get started.
Finally, thank you to everyone who has returned the handbook/acceptable use policy paper and Buckaroo Binder contract. If you have not sent it in with your child please do so before Wednesday. We will go to the computer lab, and I'd like for everyone to have access to the internet. I will also be sending out a "test" email early next week to make sure that I have everyone's correct email address.

WBRO This Week!

Service Learning Project
Last week I sent home a paper explaining a service learning opportunity for 3rd grade. If you accidentally overlooked it, here it is again:
As a team, 3rd grade is eager to announce that we are beginning a service learning project. Here’s what we’re doing. We are working with Hendricks County Healthy Families to put together Home Visit Bags for families with newborns. Are you wondering how you can help us? We need some donations of the items that will go into the Home Visit Bags: baby bottles, pacifiers, onesies, baby socks, receiving blankets, any safety items, and baby board books.
As the items are received, our third graders will put together the bags and Healthy Families will pick them up from us.
We are truly excited to take on this project which will help families in our county! We hope you’ll share in our excitement and help with whatever you are comfortable with. Finally, you can check out their website for more information www.hendrickscountyhealthyfamilies.org
We would love to start collecting donations as soon as possible! Thank you for your tremendous support in helping the families of Hendricks County!

LET'S GO TO THE MOVIES
Sing with me now, "Let's go to the movies, lets go se the stars..." Extra credit if you can name the movie this song is from. Just kidding - all this shows is my age!
Anyway, this Friday is a Movie Night at Brown Elementary. For a mere $4 ( or $8 per family) you can watch a movie - High School Musical 3 - enjoy popcorn, drink, and a sweet treat. That's a far better bargain than the going rate at the movie theater!
Best of all, your very own Mrs. Runyon will be there! So join me, my daughter Maddie, and my son Christopher, this Friday ("We're all in this together") by printing off the permission slip located on the Brown Elementary web page or click on the link I included in my blog entry from the other day, and bring that in with your $4.
Doors open at 6:15, movie starts at 6:30, and pick up is promptly at 8:15. I can't wait to see you there!

Watching the kids open their letters and share them with their clasmates brought tears to my eyes. This is going to be a tradition I hope to continue for years and years to come.

ISTEP Week!
The first round of spring ISTEP is upon us. We will begin testing Tuesday morning. Please remember the importance of a great night's sleep and a healthy breakfast in the morning. Also, please remember not to schedule any appointments in the morning the week of testing.
To gear up for testing this week, 3rd grade has decided on some Spirit Days!
Tuesday - We're Off and Running - Wear Exercise Clothes
Wednesday - "Hit It Out of the Park" - Wear Sports Clothing
Thursday - " Bulldogs Test Better than the Rest" - Wear Bulldog Clothing
Friday - " Hats off to a Great Week of Testing" - Wear hats
Also, since snacks will be provided by the PSG, students need not bring any extra snacks.
This Friday will be a Movie Night at Brown Elementary. We will be watching "High School Musical 3" We are having a friendly competition with the fourth grade. We want to have more students attend than them, so print off that permission slip located here http://www.brownsburg.k12.in.us/brown/Forms/MovieNightMarch2009.pdf and bring it in on Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday this week. We hope to have a large turnout. All proceeds benefit the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.
Finally, we have been really busy preparing for ISTEP last week, but I wanted to share with you some of the activities we have been up to the past few weeks. I hope you enjoy :)

The third graders will perform in a music program at the new performing arts center at Brownsburg High School on February 24. Mrs. Hawn, our music teacher will be sending more information home soon.
This Friday, Feb. 13 will be an early release day. Car riders and shuttles will dismiss at 12:45 and walkers/car riders will dismiss at 12:55. Monday, Feb. 16 is President's Day, and we will not have school.
Multiplication is in full force! The students are taking their timed test about twice per week. They are making terrific progress. Look for the multiplication tables coming home that correlates with the facts they are working on. We have set a goal to have a sundae party in April to celebrate multiplication mastery.
Our endangered animal unit starts this week. Today the students selected their animals to research. Students will be writing a research report, as well as completing two projects of their choosing at home. They will have several projects to choose from. Look for information coming home soon. This is a fun project, but is one that requires the students to stay organized and stay on a time table.

Brown Bonanza this Friday
This Friday, Feb. 6 will be our Brown Bonanza. This event is a fun filled family event enjoyed by all. We will have games, an auction, and most importantly, food!
Third Grade will have a basket up for auction. It is a sports themed basket. As of now, we do not have a lot of items in the basket to make a great item for bid. If you would be willing to donate items for the Sports Themed Basket, we would greatly apprecitate it!

Another Crazy Week!
Well, we survived another busy week. The students are definitely showing their flexibilty with all the changes to our schedule. Hopefully next week will be back to normal, although with a prediction of another snowstorm, who knows???

A huge thank-you to Miss McCammack for stepping in and subbing for our class today when I needed to leave today!
We started working on our research projects for our class ABC book. Be sure to check in to see all the great things we are learning.
This week for spelling, we are working on a Spelling Tic-Tac-Toe. The students need to select 3 activities that form "three in a row". The spelling tic-tac-toe will be due on Wednesday.
We started our multiplication unit today! The kids are all so excited to learn their facts. Our goal is to have mastered all multiplication facts 0-10 by April 27. The kids are working towards a "sweet surprise" as an incentive for mastering all their facts. Multiplication timed tests will begin this week.
On Wednesday, we will have our Body Safety presentation.
We are into the third quarter now. Report cards went home today. Please sign and return the envelopes this week. The report cards are yours to keep. The students are working for "BUG" Awards. "BUG" stands for "Bringing Up Grades." In order to be eligible for a bug award, students need to either maintain or bring up grades in all subject areas. I am excited to be able to hand out several "BUG" Awards for the third quarter.
